If you are thinking about starting an assisted reproduction treatment, it is normal that you have many doubts. Answering these questions will not only help you feel more at ease, but will also give you a better understanding of the process. Here we address the most frequently asked questions that patients often have before starting their treatment.

How many days does ovarian stimulation last?

Ovarian stimulation usually lasts between 10 and 14 days, although this period may vary according to each patient and the protocol indicated by our assisted reproduction specialists. During this time, hormonal drugs are administered to help develop multiple follicles in the ovaries. It is essential to attend ultrasound check-ups to adjust the treatment and ensure the best results.

How much does medication cost in assisted reproduction treatment?

The cost of fertility medication depends on the type and dosage needed for each woman, which will depend on your ovarian reserve and the number of antral follicles you have. In general, the price ranges between 900€ and 1100€, although it may be higher in cases that require more days of stimulation or specific medications.

Our doctors will always advise you on the most suitable options for you. In addition, our Fertility Advisor department will answer any questions you may have regarding the budgets and payment plans that best suit you.

How many embryos are transferred in an in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment?

In most cases, only one embryo is transferred (SET – SELECTIVE single embryo transfer) to reduce the risk of multiple pregnancy. However, in some specific cases, with lower quality embryos, two embryos may be transferred. This decision is always made in conjunction with the medical team.

Is assisted reproductive treatment painful?

In general, fertility treatments are not painful, although some patients may experience mild discomfort during ovarian stimulation or after follicular puncture. Procedures such as embryo transfer are usually painless and quick. If you experience sensitivity or discomfort, our gynaecologists will recommend options to alleviate it.

How long does a complete cycle of assisted reproduction last?

An in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycle lasts approximately 4 weeks, starting with ovarian stimulation and ending with the embryo transfer. If in your case it has been decided, for certain reasons, to freeze the embryos, the process will last approximately 15 days.

Subsequently, you will have to perform an endometrial preparation at the indicated time, but with a more flexible margin of dates and days. And finally, after the transfer, you will have to wait approximately 12 to 14 days before you can take a pregnancy test.

Can I choose my doctor during treatment?

Yes, you can choose the doctor who will accompany you throughout the whole process. Also, if at any time you wish to change your doctor, you can do so without any problem. It is important that patients feel comfortable and confident with the medical team that will carry out the entire treatment.

Fertility Madrid team is made up of experienced and experienced reproductive gynaecologists who meet daily to review and discuss all cases, so ‘your project’ is part of the team too!

What are the success rates for assisted reproduction treatments?

Success rates vary depending on factors such as the age of the patient, the quality of the embryos and the type of treatment. In general, the chances of pregnancy in an IVF cycle are between 50% and 70% for women under 35, while they decrease with age. Talking to one of our medical team about your specific chances will help you set realistic expectations.

Are the operating theatres and the laboratory in the same clinic?

Yes, our clinic has operating theatres and an embryology laboratory in the same centre. This allows procedures such as ovarian puncture and embryo transfer to be performed more quickly and efficiently, ensuring the highest quality standards.

What happens if I don’t manage to get pregnant on the first attempt?

If a cycle is unsuccessful, you can try again after a short rest period, usually 1-2 months. During this time, our gynaecologists will evaluate the results and can adjust the treatment to optimise your chances of success in the next attempt.
