Sperm donor fertility treatments are an effective option for single women who wish to become mothers, heterosexual couples who are having difficulty conceiving, and lesbian couples who need a sperm donor.

In this process, the donor sperm is used to fertilise the egg. At Fertility Madrid, we perform sperm selection using ZyMōt™ microfluidics, this method allows us to select motile spermatozoa with a lower percentage of double-stranded DNA fragmentation.

Our gynaecologists will explain in depth the different fertility treatments available and will help you choose the most suitable one for you.

Which people suit fertility treatments with donated sperm?

These treatments provide viable family-building options in a variety of circumstances. They are suitable for couples in which the male partner has poor sperm quality or is a carrier of a genetic disease that cannot be evaluated in embryos.

They are also indicated in cases of previous fertilisation failure with the partner’s sperm, poor embryo quality or repeated implantation failure when a male factor is suspected to be the main cause. They are also a viable option for women who do not have a partner or lesbian women who wish to conceive. These treatments overcome reproductive barriers and increase the chances of having a child.

How does fertility treatment with donated sperm work?

Fertility treatment with donated sperm is used in the following procedures:

  • Artificial insemination (AID): A treatment that places donated sperm directly into the woman’s uterus near the time of ovulation.
  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF/ICSI): An assisted reproduction treatment that involves fertilising an egg by intracytoplasmic microinjection with donated sperm outside the body, in the laboratory.
  • ROPA method: Allows same-sex couples to participate fully in the pregnancy process. In this method, one of the women acts as an egg donor, while the other receives the embryos to gestate them. In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is carried out with donor sperm, with both women sharing the role of parents. This approach not only strengthens the bond between the couple, but also offers them the opportunity to be fully involved in the creation and gestation of their child.

If you need further information or advice, one of our gynaecologists will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the options that may be suitable for you.

Fertility treatments with donor sperm success rates and what makes us unique

At Fertility Madrid, we have more than 8 years of experience in assisted reproduction, with a team of highly qualified professionals.

Our gynaecologists and embryologists will accompany you throughout the process with continuous monitoring and close attention to give you the security and peace of mind you need when starting your treatment.

We also have an emotional support unit, with a Coach who will help you to express and manage your feelings, providing you with continuous support from the beginning of your treatment.

Our clinic is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, such as GERI incubators, essential for maintaining an optimal environment for the embryo while it is being cultured outside the uterus. This incubator allows real-time assessment of the viability of each embryo and features high-resolution cameras that capture continuous (time-lapse) images for a more detailed assessment.

DAI success rate / IVF donor sperm success rate

Thanks to the advanced technology of our embryology laboratory, at Fertility Madrid we achieve a high success rate above the national average (SEF data).

We have state-of-the-art innovations in Assisted Reproduction, such as the GERI Time Lapse incubators. This embryo culture system significantly improves pregnancy and implantation rates.

At Fertility Madrid, we not only incorporate the most advanced technology to maximise the effectiveness of our treatments, but also to guarantee the traceability of the samples, minimise the possibility of errors and give you the peace of mind you need.

That is why we have integrated Gidget, an electronic traceability system that identifies all the elements involved in the assisted reproduction treatment by means of a unique code.

IVF with donated sperm

The process of IVF with donor sperm is very similar to the traditional IVF cycle, with the main difference being that instead of fertilising the woman’s eggs with her partner’s sperm, donor sperm is used for fertilisation. The treatment begins with the extraction of the eggs through a follicular puncture. These eggs are fertilised in Fertility Madrid’s laboratory with sperm from anonymous donors, following rigorous selection protocols. During the IVF treatment with donated sperm, the patient will receive ovarian stimulation treatment for oocyte maturation.

After egg retrieval, the eggs are combined with donor sperm, and the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus for implantation. An IVF cycle usually lasts approximately six weeks, although this timeframe can vary from person to person and is often influenced by menstrual cycles.

You can find out about the different stages of IVF treatment with donated sperm.

In this first phase the gynaecologist will explain in detail the process to be carried out, as well as the specialist counselling and the appropriate medical assessments for the patient. In addition, different gynaecological tests and analyses will be carried out, always with the support of our psychologist. Finally, the social, ethical and legal implications of receiving donated sperm will be explained to the women who are going to undergo the treatment and to their partners.

Our professionals will analyse which sperm is the most suitable using microfluidic technology, called ZyMōt™. Thanks to this system, we will also manage to recover spermatozoa with better motility, as well as those with lower levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In short, we manage to improve the selection of spermatozoa that will be used in the corresponding assisted reproduction technique.

From the banked semen, the spermatozoa are meticulously selected to guarantee their viability and quality. The selection is made on the basis of your phenotype (hair colour, eye colour, skin colour, height, blood type). The gynaecologist chooses the most suitable spermatozoa so that the future newborn has the greatest possible physical similarity to its parents.

During the transfer we use one or, at most, at Fertility Madrid and always under approval and knowing the risks that a twin pregnancy can cause in the future mother, two embryos. High quality embryos must also be frozen. The procedure is painless and does not require anaesthesia. Some women may experience mild discomfort or cramping during or after the transfer. Once the patient has rested for a few minutes, she can resume her daily activities and even return home the same day.

Two to three weeks after the insemination, the clinic’s specialists will schedule our patient for a pregnancy test.

Insemination treatments using donor sperm

Artificial Insemination with Donor Sperm (AID) is an assisted reproduction technique in which spermatozoa from sperm banks are used to carry out the insemination. This technique consists of introducing sperm into the woman’s uterus to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes, thus improving the chances of fertilisation. This procedure, which is performed at Fertility Madrid, is practically painless. It is important to note that the selection of the donor will be made according to the physical and genetic characteristics of the recipient, thus ensuring the best possible compatibility.

Once the donor has been chosen and the day of insemination has been agreed, the donated sperm will be thawed and analysed to detect possible damage due to freezing or thawing. If the thawed semen meets the requirements, it can be used for insemination.

Frequently asked questions FAQs

Sperm donors usually provide detailed information about their medical history, family background, physical traits, education, occupation, interests and any other information relevant to profiling. This information helps people seeking donors to make informed decisions and find a donor that matches their preferences and needs.

There is no risk in using donor sperm. The sample goes through a laboratory where it is thoroughly tested to rule out any infections, including diseases such as HIV, hepatitis B and C, and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Yes, sperm donors undergo rigorous genetic testing to ensure the quality and safety of the sperm. These tests identify any genetic abnormalities and ensure that the donor meets the strict selection criteria. In addition, sperm selection is performed using ZyMōt™ microfluidic technology. If requested by the patient, genetic matching with the donor can be performed using blood tests.

Donors are also selected according to blood type and Rh factor, looking for compatibility and avoiding any mismatch in race, skin, hair and eye colour.

No, according to the law in Spain, it is not possible to know the identity of the donor or the person who is going to receive the donation. This includes personal details such as the donor’s academic background.

At Fertility Madrid our professionals will select the most suitable sperm for you based on your race, skin, hair and eye colour, as well as your blood type. They will select a donor based on your physical and genetic characteristics.

In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) with donor sperm can be a suitable option for many people, including heterosexual couples with male fertility problems, lesbian couples and single women who wish to have children.
