If you have decided to stop using contraceptives in order to get pregnant, it is normal to wonder how long it will take for your body to start ovulating again and whether these methods can affect your fertility. In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions about the return of fertility after stopping the contraceptive pill and other hormonal methods.
Combined oral contraceptives, better known as ‘the pill’, work by regulating the hormonal axis, preventing ovulation by inhibiting the growth of a dominant follicle in the ovary. This is achieved by regulating the hypothalamus, preventing the secretion of hormones that stimulate follicular growth and subsequently ovulation.
One of the questions people ask most often is what happens when they stop taking contraceptive pills. Can you get pregnant immediately after stopping contraception? How long does it take for hormones to regulate after stopping the pill? We answer these questions below.
How long do contraceptive pills stop being effective after you stop taking them?
The effectiveness of combined oral contraceptives does not differ significantly depending on the formulation of the pill, i.e. even if they have different doses of hormones (oestrogen and progesterone), their effectiveness is very similar. The probability of pregnancy if no dose is missed is 0.2% in 1 year.
In general, when you stop taking contraceptives, your hormonal axis returns to its normal functioning and ovulation may occur.
It is rare for ovulation to remain inhibited for several months after stopping contraceptives, so it could be said that a woman can become pregnant from the month after stopping combined oral contraceptives.
It is important to know that the return of fertility does not automatically mean that you will become pregnant. Women who do not have regular periods or experience changes in their menstrual cycle after stopping oral contraceptives and wish to become pregnant are advised to undergo a gynaecological assessment and preliminary tests so that each case can be better guided.
How long does it take for the effects of contraceptives to wear off?
- Contraceptives stop working immediately once they are discontinued.
- However, this does not guarantee immediate ovulation.
- In general, most women ovulate in the first or second month after stopping the pill.
- Some may take up to 3-6 months to regulate their cycle.
✅ Fertility usually returns quickly. But every body is different.
Can I get pregnant right after stopping contraceptives?
Yes. In fact, some women get pregnant in the first cycle after stopping the pill. Therefore, if you do not want to get pregnant immediately, it is recommended that you use another method of contraception after stopping.
🔍 Remember: ovulating does not mean that you will get pregnant on the first try. There are other factors that influence this, such as age, ovarian reserve, and sperm quality.
What if I don't get my period after stopping contraception?
If your period does not return within 2 or 3 months after stopping the pill, it may be due to post-pill amenorrhoea. In this case:
- It does not necessarily mean there is a problem.
- It may take some time for your ovarian cycle to restart.
- If you are trying to get pregnant, it is recommended that you consult a gynaecologist after 3 months without menstruation.
How do I know if I am ovulating again?
Signs that your body has started ovulating again:
- Changes in vaginal discharge (egg white appearance)
- Increase in basal body temperature
- Mild pain in the lower abdomen (mittelschmerz)
- Positive ovulation test
When to consult a specialist
Consult a specialist if:
- You have been trying to conceive for more than 6 months without success
- Your cycles are still irregular or very long
- You have a history of hormonal or gynaecological problems
- You are over 35 and trying to conceive
Is it necessary to wait to try for a baby after stopping the pill?
No, you can try from the first cycle. However, some doctors recommend waiting for a natural period to make it easier to track your cycle and ovulation.
Does stopping contraception affect long-term fertility?
No, there is no evidence that oral contraceptives negatively affect future fertility. Most women regain their fertility quickly after stopping.
How long does it take for the menstrual cycle to regulate?
It depends on each woman. In most cases, the cycle normalises within 1 or 2 months, although in some women it may take a little longer.
