Artificial insemination is a low-complexity assisted reproduction treatment. A very mild ovarian stimulation is carried out, along with ultrasound monitoring to identify the exact moment when ovulation will occur.
Once the monitoring is complete, a semen sample—either from the partner or from a donor—is introduced into the woman’s uterus.
With this procedure, the chances of pregnancy increase compared to natural intercourse, since it allows the selection of sperm with better motility and is performed at the optimal time when the woman is ovulating.
How long should you wait after a failed intrauterine insemination?
If you have undergone an intrauterine insemination and did not achieve pregnancy, in most cases you can try a new cycle with your next period.
It is advisable to have an ultrasound check in the first days of your period to determine whether a consecutive cycle can be carried out. If the ultrasound shows everything is in order, you can try again in the next cycle.
How many intrauterine insemination attempts can be made before moving on to IVF?
According to experts, it is generally recommended to attempt a maximum of 3 intrauterine insemination cycles before considering in vitro fertilization (IVF). Of course, this may vary depending on each individual case, but as a general rule, three attempts are usually the limit.
Since the chances of pregnancy decrease significantly after the third IUI attempt, the next and more effective option is IVF.
