Healthy lifestyle habits such as staying active, eating well, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, reducing stress, and limiting exposure to environmental pollutants can all contribute to greater success with assisted reproduction techniques.
In particular, regular physical activity offers benefits at every stage of life. It improves circulation, increases relaxation (helping to reduce anxiety, depression, and insomnia), and promotes overall wellbeing.
For patients undergoing assisted reproduction treatment with ovarian stimulation, exercise may support the body’s response and help improve success rates — both in implantation and in achieving a healthy live birth at home.
In addition, staying active can provide a welcome break from the treatment process and support the patient’s emotional relaxation.
Exercising during ovarian stimulation
There are always many questions about whether it is advisable to exercise during ovarian stimulation — and if so, when, how often, and at what intensity.
In general, it is possible to exercise during ovarian stimulation. However, this depends on the type of activity chosen and the recommendation of the doctor supervising the fertility treatment.
It is important to remember that ovarian stimulation involves medication that can cause hormonal and physical changes in the body, such as enlarged ovaries and fluid retention. For this reason, your doctor may recommend avoiding certain types of exercise that involve intense physical effort or that could increase the risk of ovarian torsion.
What kind of exercise is recommended during fertility treatment?
In most cases, moderate physical activity is recommended during ovarian stimulation.
Gentle activities such as walking, yoga, or swimming are good options — always making sure to warm up properly and stay well hydrated before and after exercising. These types of activities can generally be continued throughout ovarian stimulation.
In all cases, it is essential to follow your doctor’s recommendations and avoid starting or continuing any kind of exercise without their approval.
At the same time, it is sensible to avoid high-intensity or strenuous activities during ovarian stimulation, as these may increase the risk of follicle rupture, ovarian torsion, and/or abdominal pain.
In the later stages of stimulation, just before egg retrieval, it is best to avoid high-impact activities such as aerobics, paddle tennis, spinning, horse riding, trampolining, and competitive or contact sports.
